# Connect AI tools to the Developer Portal with MCP

Connect AI coding assistants and chat tools to the Collibra Developer Portal so they can search and answer questions directly from the documentation.

The Collibra Developer Portal exposes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at a fixed URL. You can use AI tools that support MCP over HTTP to search and read the most recent version of the published documentation directly, without any manual copy-pasting or context-loading.

This tutorial walks you through connecting an AI tool to the Developer Portal MCP server and verifying the connection.

## MCP server URL

The Developer Portal MCP server is available at:

```
https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp
```

{% hint style="info" %}
Opening this URL in a browser returns an error. Use it only in an MCP-compatible tool.
{% endhint %}

## Prerequisites

* An AI tool that supports MCP over HTTP, such as Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or VS Code with GitHub Copilot.
* Network access to `developer.collibra.com`.

{% hint style="info" %}
The `stdio` and SSE transports are not supported.
{% endhint %}

## Connect your tool

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Add the server to your tool

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Claude" icon="claude" %}

1. Open [Claude](https://claude.ai) and go to **Settings** → **Connectors**.
2. Click **Add custom connector**.
3. Enter the MCP server URL:

   ```
   https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp
   ```
4. Save the connector.

If Claude does not show the option to add custom connectors, your current plan may not support remote MCP connections yet.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Claude Code" icon="claude" %}
Run the following command in your terminal:

```shell
claude mcp add --transport http collibra-developer https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp
```

You can replace `collibra-developer` with any name you prefer.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Codex" icon="openai" %}
Run the following command in your terminal:

```shell
codex mcp add collibra-developer https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp
```

Alternatively, add the following to your `config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.collibra-developer]
url = "https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp"
```

You can replace `collibra-developer` with any name you prefer.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Cursor" icon="cursor" %}

1. Open **Settings** → **MCP**.
2. Click **Add new MCP server**.
3. Enter the MCP server URL:

   ```
   https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp
   ```

Alternatively, add the following to `.cursor/mcp.json` in your project:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "collibra-developer": {
      "url": "https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

You can replace `collibra-developer` with any name you prefer.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="VS Code (Copilot)" icon="vscode" %}
Add the following to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "collibra-developer": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://developer.collibra.com/~gitbook/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

You can replace `collibra-developer` with any name you prefer.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Verify the connection

Assuming you named your connection `collibra-developer`, paste one of the following prompts into your tool to confirm it can read the pages of the Developer Portal:

* `Using the collibra-developer MCP server, what authentication methods does the Collibra REST API support?`
* `Search the Collibra Developer Portal for pagination and summarize the available options.`
* `List the tools exposed by the collibra-developer MCP server, then find the page about the Import API.`

If the tool returns an answer sourced from the Developer Portal, the connection works.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Troubleshooting

If your tool cannot connect:

* Confirm that `developer.collibra.com` is reachable from your network.
* Confirm that the server URL ends with `/~gitbook/mcp` and has no trailing characters.
* Confirm that your tool uses HTTP transport, not `stdio` or SSE.
* Remove and re-add the server if the tool cached a failed state.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://developer.collibra.com/tutorials/connect-ai-tools-to-the-developer-portal-with-mcp.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
